Meet the Owner: George Politis of Windsor Cafe

This no-frills breakfast joint will start your day off right.

Windsor Terrace is a neighborhood in transition, and Prospect Park West is as good an indicator of the area's demographic shifts as any: The Double Windsor serves pints of craft beers to the tattooed hiperati, while just across the street, Farrell's pours its own more practical suds into Styrofoam "cups" the size of small bathtubs.

But no matter if you're a 20-something newcomer or a long-tenured Windsor Terrace veteran, everyone needs a decent plate of eggs once in awhile. George Politis of Windsor Cafe, is here to give it to you.

Politis and his cousin Herculis Kontogiannis took over the cafe eight years ago from a friend, who opened it two years prior.

The bulk of the restaurant's clientele are locals, though Politis himself makes the trek to Windsor Terrace each day from Bayside, Queens.

He grew up in Bay Ridge, but moved away from the borough when he married his wife, a Queens native. But Politis said he doesn't mind the commute.

"I like coming back here," he said. "I grew up here."

Politis and Kontogiannis come from a family of restauranteurs—Politis said they were raised around the business and it stuck.

Before taking over Windsor Cafe, the cousins owned a spot on Madison Avenue, called, appropriately, Madison Cafe. They later owned a Papa John's.

Politis said he wouldn't mind expanding, but has to "wait until the economy gets a little better." Nevermind that though—judging by the full counter of customers sipping coffee and eating omelets, business seems to be finding its way in just fine.

So why should a newcomer stop by Windsor Cafe? Well, why shouldn't they? Politis said.

"It's a cool place. It's got good food, good ambiance, good company."
