BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — Students across Brooklyn joined a nationwide protest to demand stricter gun control laws exactly one month after Nikolas Cruz killed 17 students with an AR-15-style rifle in Parkland, Florida.
“I'm choosing to walk out because I want to fight back against our country's inadequate response to violence," said Mariel Haberle, a ninth grade student at Brooklyn Prospect High School. "The bottom line is we need to have more gun control laws, and too many people have been killed because we don't.”
"It is ridiculous that teenagers must now take matters into their own hands - matters that should be taken care of by our government," added Eva Ruse, an 11th grader. "I want to show that I stand by these students for stronger gun laws and safety for children."

About 30 Brooklyn public, private and charter schools were joining 2,500 educational institutions for National School Walkout on Wednesday, March 14, at 10 a.m., according to organizers from the Women’s March youth group EMPOWER.
Students and teacher protesters will take to the streets for 17 minutes — in honor of the 17 people shot to death at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School — and call for gun control laws that would ban assault weapons, mandate background checks on gun sales and allow courts to disarm people who exhibit violent behavior, organizers said.
