Programs For South Asian Youth Coming to Kensington Library

South Asian Youth Action will be conducting bi-weekly programming in the Kensington Library.

KENSINGTON, BROOKLYN — South Asian Youth Action (SAYA), a non-profit dedicated to the needs of young Americans of South Asian descent, will be launching a new program in Kensington on Feb. 7.

According to SAYA's website, the organization, founded in 1996, aims to provide support to K-12 students by creating an "accessible, safe, and culturally affirming space for year-round programming that takes place during the school day, after school, on weekends and during the summer." SAYA says its programs help "students confidently grow into engaged community leaders ready for college, career and personal success."

According to the organization, SAYA's Kensington program will take place at the Kensington Library, located at 4207 18th Ave., and will run on Tuesdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and on Thursdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Students in grades 9-12 are welcome to participate. Programming will include free SAT prep and college advisement, co-ed "Leadership Discussion Groups," and a host of other activities, including sports, arts and trips.

Last year, Kensington Councilman Brad Lander hired a Bengali-speaking staffer, Rubina "Ruby" Abdul, who conducts office hours in Bengali in the neighborhood. You can read Patch's coverage of that here.
