PROSPECT PARK, BROOKLYN — The season may still be a month away, but Brooklyn's backyard is ready to roll-out the winter activities just in time for Thanksgiving break.

Prospect Park's recently-added ice skating rink will open for the season on Wednesday, bringing figure skating, hockey and curling back onto the list of park activities.

This season, the rink, found at the LeFrak Center at Lakeside, will have a fleet of brand new skates to rent and a pair of world-renowned figure skaters to teach classes at Lakeside's Skate School.

The professional skaters, Olympians Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov, took over as directors of sports programs for the school. The pair competed in the 2006 Winter Olympics, have claimed six U.S. National Championship medals and were given an Olympic Committee award for their sports programming and youth development skills, Prospect Park leaders said.

The pair join Lakeside's Hockey Director Greg Vaslet and will bring back the Learn-To-Skate and Learn-To-Play-Hockey classes starting Dec. 2. Interim classes for all ages are also available this weekend and Thanksgiving weekend, at 9 a.m. for hockey .
