State Senate Candidate Wants to Make Brooklyn Politics Fabulous
Meet Mindy Meyer, the "Diva of the District," whose website is causing an Internet stir
A state senate hopeful wants to give Brooklyn politics a "diva" makeover.
Mindy Meyer knew her State Senate campaign website was going to stand out, but even the 22-year-old law school student — who describes herself as the "Diva of the District" — didn't anticipate the viral sensation it has become.Â
Still, Meyer, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Kevin Parker for the chance to represent the 21st Senatorial District in Brooklyn, knew what she was doing.

She decided to bedazzle her campaign website with a backsplash of hot pink and leopard print text, and welcome visitors with party-favorite LMFAO's "I'm Sexy and I Know It" for one reason: to garner attention.Â
"That was done on purpose," she said of the website's design. "But that's also my style. It's what I wanted. It might be controversial but it is substantive and it does address the issues. If you go on Kevin Parker's website, you could just fall asleep."

A message was left with Parker's office for comment.
Meyer, an Orthodox Jew whose campain platform includes cracking down on domestic violence and doing away with stop-and-frisk, told Patch the splashy design is meant to attract a younger audience and revitalize the Republican party's image.
She also uses a younger vernacular that she believes first-time voters can better identify with, including references to the popular Hunger Games franchise: "No more "Hunger Games" in our District! Mindy believes that summer youth employment programs should be restored to receive the full funding that they had received in the past," her website notes. Â
"The Republicans know it's a very Democratic district, and unless they put some sort of different candidate up, they wouldn't have much a chance," she said. "I am trying to appeal to the younger generation."
"I was in law school and thought one day in the future I would get involved in politics, but I thought why should I wait until I'm much older if I can start now?"
