To Avoid Smashed Windows, Keep Cars Empty
A spike in broken car windows means Windsor Terrace residents should be more careful than ever about what they leave in their cars.

Anyone who regularly reads our police blotter knows that Windsor Terrace has seen a spike in smashed car windows over the past few months.
Officer Dean Hanan, who heads up Community Affairs for the 72nd Precinct, said police are taking steps to monitor the situation.
"It's definitely something that’s becoming a problem," he said, adding that plain clothes officers have been patrolling the area in unmarked vehicles. "Whoever is doing it is going to get caught."

Hanan advises car owners to keep everything—from GPS devices to spare change—out of their vehicles, so as not to attract attention of would-be thieves.
Unfortunately, it seems that many victims were already following this advice, since several of the reported cases have been limited only to property damage, with no accompanying theft.Â

"The only thing people can do is lock their cars and keep doing what they're doing," Hanan said. "There’s some really bad person walking around with no regard for property."
On Dec. 11, residents worried about the safety of their cars will have the opportunity to share their concerns at the 72nd Precinct community council meeting.
The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. at 830 4th Ave.
