WEATHER ALERT: Heat Advisory in Effect, Severe Thunderstorms Possible for NYC

Be prepared for a hot and stormy Thursday night.

An urgent heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 8 p.m. on Thursday.

As of Thursday morning, the day’s high is expected to reach 87 degrees, which will feel more like the mid- to upper-90s due to extreme humidity.

But if temperatures hit 90 on Thursday, New York will be riding an official heat wave. (As a ”wave” requires three days of 90-plus heat.)

New Yorkers are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity and stay in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Via the Times:

“I want to urge all New Yorkers to be cautious,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference, taking sips of water as an example of proper hydration. “This is very high heat.”
