Vigil Planned For 19-Year-Old From NC Missing In California

ORANGE COUNTY, NC — A vigil is slated for 6 p.m. Thursday for a missing 19-year-old woman from Chapel Hill living in San Francisco who has not been seen or heard from in three weeks.

Sydney "Syd" West was recently a student at University of California, Berkeley and was living in San Francisco with friends at the time of her disappearance, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

She was last spotted near the Golden Gate Bridge at Crissy Field before dawn Sept. 29.

"This is every parent's nightmare and all we want is our daughter Sydney to be found safe and brought home to our family," said West's father in a plea for help.

West is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and 130 pounds, with blue eyes and light brown hair. She was last seen in long, dark leggings, a teal sweatshirt and slip-on Vans shoes in a dark green and black print.

"She has been reported missing with the San Francisco authorities and entered into NCIC as a missing person," the sheriff's office said in a statement. A missing persons case has also been opened in North Carolina, and the sheriff's office said that anyone in the state who may have had recent contact with her is asked to call 919-245-2909..

The Thursday night vigil for West is planned at Lions Wayside Park, and will bring together her community, celebrate their love for her and keep up the momentum to find her, organizers said. Remarks and an open microphone session will begin at 6:15 p.m. The vigil will be livestreamed here.
