Wilmington Seniors Defying the Odds
12 Inspirational "60-Somethings" to be Featured on 2021 Calendar

WILMINGTON, NC (January 18, 2021) -- The pages of a calendar reveal a new year and new opportunities...and for many Baby Boomers, “prioritize my health” is likely on their 2021 resolution list. Exemplifying just that is a dynamic group of 12 Wilmington “60 somethings” – seniors who prove that a positive attitude is the right fuel to help them overcome obstacles and chronic health conditions and live a longer, healthier life. From competing in the Olympics, to working with underprivileged youth, to pursuing a career in social work after surviving childhood abuse –in an effort to “pay it forward,” the Wilmington 60 Strong Ambassadors are sharing their stories and spirit with their peers.
These 12 inspirational seniors, who range in age from 60 to 69, were selected to be “pin- ups” on an exclusive 2021 calendar; they are highlighted alongside notable Wilmington landmarks in a 2021 calendar featuring area activities and events that seniors can enjoy. The calendar will also feature health tips and provide information about Medicare information sessions and open enrollment. The 60 Strong Ambassadors were chosen by a celebrity panel of judges, including Wilmington media personalities, government officials, and leaders in the arts and education who were impressed by their unique stories that shared a common thread – grit, resilience and a fervent drive to give back.
The winners of Wilmington 60 Strong are as follows:

One 60 strong ambassador, Gayla MacMillan, was a divorced, single parent when she tragically lost her home to Hurricane Floyd. But in her moment of need, strangers in the community came to her aid. When Gayla got back on her feet, she had a new drive to help others in similar situations. Today, she works with Rose Hill Charity Rebuild Center to help restore homes damaged by Hurricane Florence. Gayla says, “sometimes you might be the only encouragement to someone else—so be that person. Be that encourager.”
