The Academy of Thought and Industry (ATI) at Lake Norman takes a different approach towards education. At ATI, education is holistic and student-driven, focused not only on cognitive and academic goals, but also on the social-emotional growth and development of its students. Teachers lay the foundations for success in life for all students through a carefully constructed curriculum of core classes β and then individualize the school experience for each student through one-on-one coaching, elective offerings, and supporting independent student work.
The main goal of ATI at Lake Norman is to prepare students ages 12 to 14 for high school and beyond. "Our middle school teachers work with their students to set individual goals and create plans for success that are unique and well-suited to them," says Laura Macartney, Head of School. "It's our job to challenge students to be the best version of themselves that they can be. We cultivate an atmosphere of individuality, collaboration, friendship, and respect."

ATI offers adolescents a school that blends experiential and intellectual learning with opportunities for real creativity and work. Active involvement in the local community is a hallmark of the program. Students take a leadership role in real-world projects, such as designing and planting a community garden, implementing a schoolwide composting initiative, and starting their own business.
ATI Lake Norman helps students realize their full potential. Adolescence is a social time, and the whole of the ATI program is structured to support students in learning to function as productive members of a community.
