CHARLOTTE, NC β€” Amazon is giving North Carolina grocery shoppers more incentive to fill their buggies at Whole Foods by extending discounts to Amazon Prime members at the register, the company announced Monday. The discount program offers an additional 10 percent off sales items, along with exclusive deep discounts on select items chosen weekly.

The move to extend Prime discounts at the North Carolina stores is part of the online retailer’s goal of reducing prices at the upmarket organic grocer that it bought for $13.7 million a year ago. The rollout of the discount program announced June 11 will extend to 10 states this week that include Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington.

Some of the savings include $2 off a pound of organic peaches, $9 off a pound of wild sustainably caught yellowfin tuna steaks and half-off tea cookies sold by the pound, Amazon said.

The discount program, which was rolled out in Whole Foods stores in Florida earlier this year, joins other recently launched programs. Amazon and Whole Foods launched free two-hour delivery on groceries through Prime Now in 10 cities, and there are plans to expand that service elsewhere in the U.S. this year. Eligible Prime members also receive 5 percent on Whole Foods Market purchases when using the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Card.

β€œWe’re excited that Prime savings will be available at nearly half of our Whole Foods Market stores this week, giving more Prime members access to great deals just in time for summer,” A.C. Gallo, president and chief operating officer at Whole Foods Market, said in a statement. β€œBased on the positive customer feedback and successes we’ve seen over the past month, we’re accelerating our timeline to expand these savings to all of our U.S. stores.”
