Grande, who hails from Florida, launched her career in 2008, when she appeared in the Broadway musical "13." Shortly thereafter she took on the role of Cat Valentine in the Nickelodeon television show "Victorious, " which ran from 2010 to 2013, and its spinoff, "Sam and Cat."

Her first musical appearance was on the "Victorious" soundtrack, which led to her signing by Republic Records in 2011. This came about when music executive Monte Lipman viewed one of her YouTube videos, in which she sang covers of various popular songs.

Her debut album, Yours Truly, (2013) was heavily influenced by '60s doo-wop and '90s R&B. Electronic Dance Music became her expression of choice for her second album, "My Everything" (2014). The album topped the U.S. charts and produced four Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100: "Problem," "Break Free," "Bang Bang," and "Love Me Harder," the most by any artist in 2014. Grande is the first artist to have her first five studio albums debut in the Top 10 on U.S. charts.

Her awards and recognitions include three American Music Awards, three MTV Europe Music Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards and six Grammy Award nominations. In addition, Time magazine named Grande one of the Top 100 most influential people in the world in 2016. In 2018, Billboard named her Woman of the Year.

Grande's music style has been characterized as pop and R&B with elements of EDM and hip-hop. The Los Angeles Times review of her third album, "Dangerous Woman," said it is"impressive how fully she inhabits the emotional environment of each song here, even when one directly contradicts another. She's deft [at] adapting to different styles."

Composer and playwright Jason Robert Brown addressed Grande in a 2016 Time magazine article:

"No matter how much you are underestimated ... you are going to open your mouth and that unbelievable sound is going to come out. That extraordinary, versatile, limitless instrument that allows you to shut down every objection and every obstacle. That voice – powered by nothing but your remarkable empathy, your ravenous intelligence, your cool discipline and your voracious ambition."

Grande has a large following on social media. By December 2018, her YouTube channel had accrued more than 30 million subscribers and her music videos had been viewed more than 12 billion times. Meanwhile, her Instagram account had accumulated more than 140 million followers, ranking her as the 3rd most-followed person on Instagram; her Twitter account had more than 60 million followers, making it the 11th most-followed account; and her Facebook page had more than 30 million likes.
