Charlotte Hookah Lounge Shootout Leaves One Seriously Wounded

Police released dramatic footage of the shooting that left more than 55 spent shell casings outside the College Street hookah lounge.

CHARLOTTE, NC β€” Charlotte police are asking the community for information after a predawn shootout outside an Uptown hookah lounge Monday morning left one person with a life-threatening gunshot wound and dozens of spent shell casings on the ground.

According to a police report, the shooting occurred around 2:20 a.m. Monday morning outside the Babylon Hookah Lounge, located at 520 College Street. When responding officers arrived, the found one man shot, suffering a life-threatening wound. He was taken to an area hospital by MEDIC.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department found more than 55 spent shell casings from rifles and pistols at the scene. The barrage of gunfire struck four vehicles and one building.

An initial investigation determined the suspects fled the scene in a Nissan NV200, which Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officers located and attempted to stop.

"The driver refused to stop, and a vehicle pursuit ensued," CMPD said.

The chase ended in the 1800 block of Pegram Street when the Nissan stopped and all its occupants fled on foot. CMPD deployed a Canine unit, which led officers to detain five suspects. An AK-47 rifle and a 9mm pistol were found during a search of the Nissan and seized, CMPD said

As of Tuesday afternoon, none of the suspects were charged in the May 17 shooting, however two of those apprehended were arrested for outstanding warrants, CMPD said. Damajae Williams, 18, was charged with shooting into occupied property. Mudullahi Mohamed, 19, was charged with possession of stolen property.

CMPD released dramatic footage of the shooting taken from a security camera belonging to a nearby business and said anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 9-1-1 immediately.
