Danny G. Alberto Shares Five Ways to Eat More Fruits and Veggies

Charlotte, North Carolina-based personal chef Danny G. Alberto shares five easy ways to get more fruits and vegetables into your diet.

Do you hate green shakes, spinach, and hummus? Are you trying to add more fruits and vegetables, but cringe at the thought of broccoli? Don't worry! Here, North Carolina-based personal chef Danny G. Alberto shares some ways to make eating more produce interesting and easy.

Try Something New

We've all strolled down the produce aisle and had a strange, spiky fruit grab our attention. Instead of passing over that zombie-ish cabbage, why not try it? Not only is it healthier to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, but you might just find a new favorite.

Put Green in Everything

It may seem bizarre, but it's true. Almost anything you cook could handle a handful of spinach, and you would hardly taste it. Danny G. Alberto recommends blending a cup of spinach into your favorite sauce, such as marinara. If you’re making a smoothie, do the same thing; grab a handful of spinach and throw it in the blender with berries, bananas, and other flavorful fruits. You won’t even know you’re eating greens!

Don't Be Afraid of Fat

Use a little olive oil or dressing to make your veggies more palatable. Pan-fried mushrooms--just mushrooms tossed in oil and fried in a pan--are delicious and take 5 minutes to make. Cucumber slices dipped in your favorite dressing are a great alternative to less healthy snacks like potato chips. Pan-fried onions (again, just sizzle onions in a pan for a bit) taste great on some whole-grain crackers. All of these options are much healthier, and your body will thank you.

Find Veggie Gold

Tons of fruit-and-veggie-based snacks flood the market with tasty, guiltless indulgence. Veggie straws, rice cakes, and other healthier options are on grocery shelves next to more fattening snacks like potato chips and cheese puffs. It might require some trial and error to find what you like, but there is a gold mine of delicious and nutritious vegetable and fruit snacks available in most supermarkets.

When It Looks Good, It Tastes Good

The French believe the look of the food is half the taste. For around $5, you can get stencils or fruit cutters to turn a watermelon into cute hearts and pineapple into fun, edible dots. If that doesn't float your boat, try a little whipped cream with your fruit. Some whipped cream is only about 20 calories a serving, and if you add some peaches, it's practically pie.

Go Forth and Snack!

Now that you’ve read Danny G. Alberto’s new, interesting ways to eat more fruits and veggies, try them at home! These tips can help you make eating fruits and vegetables more fun for your whole family.
