Deluge Of Rain Leads To Flash Flooding Throughout Charlotte Metro

Flash flooding occurred throughout the Charlotte region Thursday.

CHARLOTTE, NC β€” Hours of heavy rains led to flash flooding in the City of Charlotte as well as outlying areas of the metro region Thursday morning.

A flash flood warning was issued for Mecklenburg County, as well as Iredell, Catawba, Southeastern Cleveland, west central Davie, Gaston, Lincoln and northwestern Mecklenburg and northwestern Rowan counties shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday.

"Due to recent heavy rainfall and high stream levels, flooding conditions will be easier to reach with new rainfall amounts around 2 inches," the National Weather Service said.

In Charlotte, a flash flood warning was in effect until at least through 11 a.m.

"DO NOT attempt to travel unless necessary and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways," the City of Charlotte said, via Twitter.

Before dawn Thursday, rescue crews from Iredell County responded to assist with multiple swift water rescues near Conover in Catawba County. Around 6 a.m., about 15 to 20 campers were reported trapped at the Hiddenite Family Campground, Conover Fire Department said, via Twitter.

At least one person was rescued after being trapped on the roof of their car in high water, according to reports.

Charlotte Fire Department said their crews were also responding to multiple reports of flooding around the city.

NWS offered these precautionary tips:

  • If you encounter a flooded road, turn around. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
  • Be aware. Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low-lying spots.
