According to an initial police investigation, excessive speed is believed to be a major factor in the crash.

The car “was traveling above the posted speed limit and the driver lost control,” CMPD said in a report. “The Buick began to skid and slid off the road to the right. The front bumper of the Buick grazed one tree, then continued off the roadway and struck a second tree on the driver’s side.”

Gibson was wearing a seatbelt and police do not suspect impairment was a factor in the crash.
