Good Samaritan Climbs Into Storm Drain To Rescue 8 Ducklings

A Charlotte man reunited eight ducklings with their mother after they fell drain into a storm drain. Here's a video of his good deed.

CHARLOTTE, NC β€” A Charlotte man went above and beyond to reunite a mother duck with her babies by climbing into a storm drain to rescue eight ducklings.

Last Saturday, Michael Plumides spotted the mother mallard duck circling the curb as he was driving past.

"I thought to myself, that's an odd place for a duck to be quacking loudly and in apparent distress," Plumides said, recounting the ordeal on social media.

Plumides turned his car around, got out to get a closer look and said, "I could hear her ducklings frantically calling out for their mother." The iron grate covering the drain, however, was too heavy for him to move on his own. He flagged down another driver, who helped him move it out of the way.

Then, he did what would be the unimaginable to most: he climbed down into the nine-foot hole. In flip-flips.

"I didn't know how many," were in the drain, he said. "I thought one or two maybe."

All total, the good Samaritan plucked eight chirpy birds from the drain, gently scooping them up above his head to safety. The ran to their mother, and were gone by the time he climbed out.

"It is our charge to help the more innocent creatures in life," Plumides wrote. "If we don't, who will?"
