Hurricane Dorian Ocracoke: Feral Cats Seen After Flooding
A group of Ocracoke Island's feral cats was seen in a backyard after a 7-foot storm surge impacted the barrier island.
OCRACOKE, NC β Ocracoke Island perhaps had the worst damage from Hurricane Dorian in North Carolina, with storm surge rising 7 feet in a matter of hours and emergency responders evacuating residents trapped in their homes. The barrier island is also home to a feral cat population, and at least some of them were able to weather the storm.
Ocracats, a volunteer-run group that works to control and care for the feral cats, shared an update from a resident Friday night. According to the post, a colony of cats was outside her yard after the storm surge subsided.
The group feeds the colonies, runs a Trap-Neuter-Release program, offers medical care for injured or ill cats, fosters cats and coordinates adoptions. Volunteers typically foster cats, and many have been adopted by people who vacation on Ocracoke Island. Donations to Ocracats can be made online.

Rescue crews in North Carolina are continuing to transport supplies to Ocracoke Saturday. A photo posted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation shows serious damage to 500-foot sections of North Carolina Highway 12 after flooding. Ferry service to Ocracoke is only open to emergency responders and evacuations of residents. The North Carolina Department of Transportation began inspecting ferry routes after the storm cleared and said once channels were confirmed clear, service could resume to the island Saturday.
