Majority Of Adults In NC In Favor Of COVID Vaccine: Elon Poll

Support for coronavirus vaccines has grown in the state since the fall, according to a new statewide poll by Elon University.

NORTH CAROLINA β€” A growing number of North Carolinians are in favor of getting vaccinated against coronavirus, according to a new statewide poll released by Elon University Friday.

Nearly two out of three North Carolinians said they have already been vaccinated or intend to, according to an April 2 survey of about 1,400 state residents. The shift in support is nearly double that expressed about six months ago, according to the survey results.

β€œVaccine support has increased dramatically since we started tracking attitudes in October 2020,” Jason Husser, director of the Elon Poll and associate professor of political science, said in a statement. β€œAt that time, only 33 percent of North Carolina residents said β€˜yes’ when asked about their vaccine plans. Now, 63 percent have either already taken a vaccine or plan to take it when they can.”

Of those who have already been vaccinated, the overwhelming majority β€” 92 percent β€” said they were glad that they did.

Almost one in five respondents, however, remained stubborn in their resolve to not get vaccinated. That resistance could have a larger impact on the state, according to Husser.

β€œThe size of the group of residents saying β€˜no’ to vaccines has consistently been around 20 percent for months,” Husser said. β€œThis continues to cast doubt in my mind about whether some herd immunity goals will be met throughout all regions of North Carolina.”

As of April 8, about 40 percent of adults in North Carolina had received at least one shot, while about 28 percent of adults were fully vaccinated, according to North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services data.
