Sisu was determined to make the stuffed purple unicorn at a Dollar General store his own. He tried to steal it, so often he got locked up.

DUPLIN COUNTY, NC β€” It could be dogs, especially one who’s been on his own, need comfort unicorns, too.

Sisu is a β€œsassy” North Carolina stray who’s been hitting up the same Dollar General store for a while now, the Duplin County Animal Services department wrote on its Facebook page.

With a picture of Sisu kenneled at the shelter, the agency said lockup is the consequence β€œwhen you break into the Dollar General consistently to steal the purple unicorn you [laid] claim to.”

What was it that attracted the repeat offender’s eye? The plushness of the lilac-colored unicorn or the sparkle on its fuschia-colored horn, hooves and ears? Or would any old stuffed animal, vegetable or anything short of a mineral have caught the stray’s eye?

Whatever the reason for his fixation, store personnel finally laid down the law and called Animal Services on Sisu. The big-hearted officer couldn’t bear separating the suspect and the unicorn and paid for the booty.

All’s fine now, and Sisu has a chance at a forever home.

He’s about a year old and weighs 67 pounds β€” a tad overweight and β€œmuch larger in person” than he appears in his mug shots, Animal Services wrote on the Facebook post, saying he’s up for adoption.

He’s streetwise and has some swagger β€” no surprise for a career unicorn thief.

Animal Services said the β€œvery vocal” dog is β€œsassy with other dogs and will not tolerate backtalk” from them. He wants to be the king of his castle, but is β€œvery obedient with people.” He knows the commands for β€œsit,” β€œlay” and β€œheel.”

And β€” as if this weren’t apparent β€” Animal Services suggested one thing that will make Sisu happy when he’s adopted: He β€œloves unicorns from Dollar General.”

Does crime pay? If he could talk, a stray dog who kept breaking into the same Dollar General store might say it does. He not only got a gift of the stuffed unicorn he tried to steal, but also a chance at a real home. (Photo courtesy of Duplin County Animal Services)
