Pence Charlotte Visit Leads To Road Closures Through Friday Night

CHARLOTTE, NC — Vice President Mike Pence is arriving in Charlotte Friday, and with his visit will come sporadic road closures through the center of Charlotte, according to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department.

Vice President Mike Pence will be in Charlotte April 20 headlining an event heralding recently enacted tax cuts. The "Tax Cuts To Put America First" event is at the Park Expo and Conference Center and begins Friday at 3:15 p.m.

“In anticipation of the United States Vice President Mike Pence’s visit to Charlotte, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and United States Secret Service are asking for the public’s patience and consideration towards road closures between the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport and the Park Expo and Conference Center located at 800 Briar Creek Road,” CMPD said in a statement.

Road closures between these two locations will be sporadic and put in place between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., and drivers are encouraged to seek alternate routes to their desired destination, CMPD said.

Political analysts say the public appearance is aimed at helping Republicans stay in the majority. Pence's visit to Charlotte — where Rep. Robert Pittenger faces not only a hard primary inside his own party but also a looming threat that North Carolina's 9th Congressional District could flip to Democrats — is part of his ongoing national public tour aimed at curbing GOP losses in what Politico says "are shaping up to be bruising 2018 midterm elections."
