Senior Story: Melissa Lozada, Mallard Creek High

In a normal year, navigating the journey to college is difficult. When you are going to be a first-generation college student during a pandemic, the navigation is even more difficult. Mallard Creek High senior Melissa Lozada learned quickly how to do it. She is planning to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Melissa plans to double-major in psychology and musical theater. To accomplish this task, she needed to audition her dance piece virtually. After graduation, she hopes to be in New York City on Broadway, work with individuals in the performing arts while attending New York University for graduate school.

While at Mallard Creek, Melissa's highlight was being involved with the theater department and being a part of the annual productions. She will always remember the weekend rehearsals and backstage banter with the tech crew and opening night.

Melissa said, "I have multiple influences in my life for various aspects of my life, but the biggest ones are my mom and my middle school theater teacher, Mrs. Burand. Both of these women motivate me and are the models for my work ethic and perseverance. Overcoming personal challenges and always staying ahead of the game were lessons that were implemented in me from a young age, and it's thanks to them that I have amassed success with the projects and activities I have pursued."
