Thousands Without Power After Charlotte Storm

Duke Energy estimated nearly 45,000 customers were without power in North Carolina after a storm swept through the area Sunday.

CHARLOTTE, NC β€” Tens of thousands of residents are without power after severe storms downed trees and power lines in the Charlotte area Sunday afternoon.

The Charlotte Fire Department said they responded to "numerous storm-related calls." Residents reported blocked roads, damaged homes and hail the size of golf balls.

Interstate 77 was closed in both directions because of downed power lines in Davidson, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said.

Duke Energy estimated about 43,000 customers were without power in North Carolina.

The National Weather Service has not confirmed whether a tornado touched down in the area.
