Tornado Warning Issued For Southern Mecklenburg County

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for southern Mecklenburg after a radar indicated rotation.

CHARLOTTE, NC β€” A tornado warning was issued for southern Mecklenburg County Thursday afternoon after a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located on radar about 8 miles north of Rock Hill, the National Weather Service said.

The warning is in effect for southern Mecklenburg County, northwestern Union County and northeastern York County until 5:30 p.m.

A tornado warning means that there is imminent danger to life and property, and you should seek shelter, NWS said

The news follows a tornado watch that was issued for Mecklenburg, along with five other Charlotte metro counties, Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

In addition to Mecklenburg, the watch is in effect for Cabarrus, Lincoln, Cleveland, Gaston and Union counties, NWS said. The watch will remain in effect until 6 p.m.

A tornado watch means weather conditions are favorable for the possible development of tornadoes in the watch area. "During the watch, people should review tornado safety rules and be prepared to move a place of safety if threatening weather approaches," NWS said.
