DUPLIN COUNTY, NC β€” Here’s some excellent news: Sisu, the unicorn-thieving stray dog who won the world’s heart with his Dollar General store crime spree, has been adopted.

The β€œsassy” 1-year-old β€œconsistently” broke into a Dollar General store and tried to steal the plush, purple unicorn with a shiny horn, hooves and ears. Sisu’s dogged determination paid off.

The big-hearted Duplin County Animal Services officer who intervened on the store’s behalf couldn’t bear separating Sisu and the unicorn and paid for the toy.

The public couldn’t smile enough at the pictures of the masculine, tough-looking and, at 67 pounds, tad overweight dog cuddling the unicorn. Mary Shannon Johnstone, whose Facebook page identifies her as living in Raleigh, North Carolina, took a few more photos Friday.

The shelter did not say who adopted the β€œvery vocal” dog who β€œwill not tolerate backtalk” from other dogs. On Facebook, the shelter said Sisu has β€œan adopter and a rescue.”

The dog’s legions of fans were happy, but some were sad that he found himself on his own at such a young age.

β€œThis story brought tears to my eyes,” one woman wrote. β€œA huge thank you to the officer who was so sweet to buy the unicorn for this pup. He probably had a family at some point.

β€œUnfortunately, a lot of dogs get dumped. This baby was just trying to find some comfort in all of the disappointment.”

Others speculated the pup was lost and the unicorn at the Dollar General looked familiar to him.

β€œI’m guessing his original owners gave him [something] similar,” one person wrote. β€œHe might be lost, and they might be looking for him. He’s so adorable. I just want to love on him. He obviously has a lot of love to give.”

Others saw opportunities for other dogs at the shelter. β€œHoping everyone who was interested in Sisu looks at the other available pups that need good homes,” one woman commented.

β€œEveryone who was interested in adopting this baby please consider adopting another,” someone else chimed in. β€œThey all need a chance at love!”

The comments revealed something else. Sisu isn’t the only dog with a comfort unicorn.

One woman commented that her dog β€œgoes nowhere without his stuffed pink unicorn.”

In fact, Duplin County Animal Services says it’s accepting donations of stuffed unicorns.
