CHARLOTTE, NC β€” Free Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines are now available for walk-ins and also by appointment, Mecklenburg County Public Health announced Tuesday.

Anyone who is 16 years old and older and wants one is now eligible to receive one in North Carolina.

The vaccinations are administered in the health department's clinic set up in the Bojangles Coliseum, located at 2700 East Independence Boulevard in Charlotte. The clinic is open Monday and Tuesday, as well as Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. On Wednesdays, it is open 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

The development comes as Mecklenburg County's vaccination rate lags behind that at the state level.

As of April 20, about 27.4 percent of Mecklenburg County residents had received at least one dose of vaccine and 19.2 percent were fully vaccinated, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. The rate is much lower than the statewide average of nearly 47 percent of North Carolina residents having received at least one dose and about 35 percent fully vaccinated.

How To Make An Appointment
Anyone 16 years old or older seeking to make an appointment for a vaccination may do so at the StarMed website, found here. Appointments may also be made by calling the MCPH COVID-19 Hotline at 980-314-9400.

"As previously announced, MCPH will be administering the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines at this clinic due to the recommended pause in administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine," MCPH said. "Second dose appointments will be scheduled at the first dose appointments."
