Cornelius Election Results 2019: 5 Newly Elected Commissioners

CORNELIUS, NC — Cornelius voters turned out on Election Day, Nov. 5. to cast their ballots to decide races for new town commissioners and affirm town mayor Woody Washam, Jr., who ran unopposed.

Polls were open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Washam, who is a Cornelius native and served as mayor for two years, retained his seat with 3,873 votes. Denia Bilodeau, Jim Duke, Mike Miltich, Thurman Ross, Jr. and Tricia Sisson were also elected to the Town of Cornelius Board of Commissioners, according to unofficial results from the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

“Keeping the quality of life in focus as our town develops into the future is of utmost importance,” Washam told Lake Norman Publications leading up to the election. As part of his platform, Washam said some of the most important issues facing Cornelius included enhancing public transportation, completing greenway construction, establishing a town affordable housing policy and enhancing economic development through job growth, he told the newspaper.

All Mecklenburg County voters also had a chance to have their say for a proposed one-quarter percent local sales and use tax, which would help fund the Arts and Science Council, parks and education. That proposal, which would have increased the county sales tax from 7.25 percent to 7.5 percent, was rejected by voters, according to unofficial results at 10 p.m.
