Damaging Winds, Severe Thunderstorms Possible In Cornelius

CORNELIUS, NC — Stormy weather is expected for much of the piedmont of North Carolina including Cornelius Monday afternoon, and severe weather moving into the region could produce hail, high winds, heavy rainfall and a brief tornado, according to the National Weather Service.

“Numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop across the mountains this afternoon and early evening ahead of an approaching cold front, NWS said in a hazardous weather outlook bulletin Monday morning. “At least scattered thunderstorms should survive eastward across the piedmont through the mid to late evening hours. The primary threat with these thunderstorms will be the potential for damaging wind gusts. Large hail will be a secondary hazard with these thunderstorms, and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out. Any of these thunderstorms will also have the potential to produce frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and locally heavy rainfall.”
