ALERT: Cumberland County Sheriff Advises on Water Safety

Cumberland County Sheriff Earl R. Butler warns the community of water safety practices.

There have been two young lives lost due to drowning in bodies of water in the area.  Both were experienced swimmers.

Residents are being advised to avoid swimming in waters that are not authorized as recreational areas.

Recent rains have caused rivers and creek beds to rise.  As a result, underwater visibility is near zero and currents are moving swiftly.  It’s believed those conditions contributed to the deaths of two local high school students.

Also, never swim alone.  Make sure you have a swim buddy when you are in the water.

Please know that the Sheriff’s Office is concerned about everyone’s safety and our condolences are with families who’ve lost loved ones.
