In Case of Emergency: Know How to Shut Off Utilities
Storm season is upon us, be prepared.

As summer storms approach, be prepared to safely shut off the utilities to your home. Make sure all family members understand how to perform these tasks with this guidance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency:
- Natural Gas. Procedures differ, so contact your gas company for instruction on how to shut off your meter. Be sure not to actually turn off the gas. FEMA warns that if you do turn off the gas, never turn it back on yourself; call a professional.
- Water. Cut the flow of water into your home using the main house valve, which experts say could be in the basement, on an exterior wall or near your water meter. Ask the utility company or a plumber for help locating it — before a leak occurs.
- Electricity. At the circuit box, turn off all individual circuits before shutting off the main circuit. If you need help locating the box and understanding the labeled circuits inside, contact your local power company or an electrician.
