Large Turnout for Annual Heroes Run 5k/10k
Fayetteville kids and parents showed up to support the YMCA's race to benefit the local Girls on the Run and Stride programs.
Hundreds crossed the finish line at Saturday mornings Heroes Run. The YMCA of the Sandhills sponsored the event with all proceeds to benefit the local elementary and middle school running programs for girls and boys.
The kids trained for the annual 5k event and ran the event with a parent, family member or coach - some for the first time, ever.
A handful of participants wore their Boston Marathon bib numbers as a show of support of the race they endured.

Local runner Richard Barbaro, and 2013 Boston Marathon finisher, crossed the finish line Saturday with a large smile, much like the one his daughter Emmie would have worn. A photo of Emmi was displayed on the back of her dad's shirt. The community was rocked with sadness when this family lost their daughter in a December sled riding accident.
Another 2013 Boston Marathon finisher said they did not full accountability for the Fayetteville and Fort Bragg crowd until 8p.m. that Monday night, since the groups started at different wave times.

Tears filled the eyes of many at the start of the race when the National Anthem was played on a trumpet, then again for others at the finish of their first race.
