Local Man Posed as a Special Forces Soldier to Scam People
Authorities are asking any possible victims to come forward.
Cumberland County Sheriff’s Detectives are searching for victims who may have been duped by a local man according to Debbie Tanna, Public Information Officer.
James Edward Coombs, 39, of 1203 Heritage Way, Cameron, is believed to be posing at various times, as a Fort Bragg Special Forces officer, a Sergeant First Class soldier or a Federal Air Marshal. He allegedly approaches unsuspecting victims, asking for money. Coombs tells them his wallet was stolen and he doesn’t have enough money to get him back to the military base.
Coombs is known to frequent Walmart parking lot on Skibo Road in Fayetteville. He has also been arrested at rest stops along Interstate 95, wearing the military uniform while pandering.

Coombs has an extensive criminal record that includes possession of a stolen car, stolen credit cards, drug charges, fraud, forgery, and disorderly conduct.
Anyone who may have been victimized by Coombs, is urged to contact the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at (910) 323-1500.
