Tropical Storm Karen Could Form Today

In the early hours on Thursday, October 3, 2013, NOAA's National Hurricane Center in Miami issued its tropical weather outlook due to a low pressure system located over the northwestern Caribbean Sea.

An area of low pressure centered near the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula that is expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico today is producing gale-force winds - but the system's circulation is not yet well defined. NOAA forecasts that this system could develop into a tropical storm at any time today. This system has a high chance (80%) of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.

If the system develops into a tropical storm or hurricane, the next name for the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane season are Hurricane Karen.

Mid-August through October  is the historical peak of hurricane season.
