What is your professional background? Small Business Owner

How did you become involved with the Greensboro Science Center? I visited with my kids when they were young and instantly knew I wanted to be involved.

Why is the GSC important to you personally? The GSC represents what we as a community can do when we think big. I am a “boomerang” who grew up in Greensboro and moved back in my 30s.  Moving back, one of my concerns was that Greensboro hadn’t changed or improved. The GSC proved me wrong – the innovation and creativity that happens on campus is inspiring and critical towards attracting families to this region. I view the GSC as an economic development asset that allows companies to attract new talent to this region.

Why is the GSC important to the community? When people ask me what differentiates GSO from other communities, I point to the GSC – there is no asset like it in the southeast. Too often, we try to compete with other communities with similar assets, but with the GSC, we have something unique. People from all over the country (and the world) visit the GSC and can’t believe that we have this incredible place in Greensboro, North Carolina. Simply put, the GSC makes us different.

What plans for the GSC’s future are you most excited about and why? Continuing the evolution of connecting the GSC with the Battleground Parks District is the most exciting aspect for me. I grew up going to the “Natural Science Center” and taking walks at Country Park and Guilford Battleground Park. While I have fond memories of these times, I am excited for my kids (and grandkids) for what they will experience with a full realized asset in the heart of Greensboro. We are truly evolving into a 21st century destination where people from across our city and region can’t benefit from an incredible vision at both the GSC and the BPD.

Is there anything else our members would be interested to know about you? Everyone loves the animals at the GSC and the zoo/aquarium aspect of the GSC. I was never an animal lover and didn’t understand the attraction to all the animals. Instead, I loved the “museum” side of the experience. However, VP of Animal Welfare Jessica and her team have taken me on a number of tours where I have gotten to know the animals, and it has truly changed my view of them. Recently, my family got our first dog in large part due to my experiences at GSC and recognizing the joys of loving another creature. I will always be grateful for the GSC team opening up my eyes (and heart) towards all these beautiful creatures.
