2-Year-Old Accidentally Shot After Finding Gun, Arrest Made: ICSO

The child was accidentally shot after finding the loaded semi-automatic pistol lying on a bed, the Iredell County Sheriff's Office said.

IREDELL COUNTY, NC — An Iredell County man was arrested Monday, one day after a 2-year-old child was accidentally shot after finding a loaded semi-automatic handgun in a Statesville home.

The child, who was in stable condition at Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem, found the loaded weapon lying on a bed in a home on Old Wilkesboro Road in Statesville, the Iredell County Sheriff's Office said.

"Crime Scene Investigators located the weapon, a .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol, along with bullet fragments in the bedroom of the home," ICSO said in a statement "Investigators determined the child had gained access to a loaded pistol which was lying on the bed, and the shot was accidental."

Erin Dreshon Venderburg, 25, of Statesville was charged with misdemeanor failure to store firearms to protect a minor and misdemeanor child abuse.

Following his arrest Monday, Vanderburg was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center. He was issued a $10,000 secured bond.

A misdemeanor child abuse arrest warrant was also issued for the child's mother, identified as Alyssa Marie Lyons, 19 snf of the home where the incident occurred. As of Monday afternoon, that warrant remained outstanding, ICSO said.
