Mooresville Fire-Rescue Responds To Kitchen Fire In Winslow Bay
Fire officials credit a smoke alarm for alerting a Mooresville family during a fire caused by unattended cooking early Monday morning.

MOORESVILLE, NC — Unattended late-night cooking on a stove top that ended in a kitchen fire in a Mooresville home early Monday morning is a cautionary tale underscoring the value of smoke detectors, according to Mooresville fire officials.
Firefighters responded to the kitchen fire on Comata Road in the Winslow Bay neighborhood shortly before 1:30 a.m. Monday, May 31, Mooresville Fire-Rescue said.
They responded to the home within six minutes of receiving the call, and found all the home's occupants outside and uninjured. "The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes and damage was limited to the kitchen," MFR said in a statement.

Fire investigators determined a person in the home began cooking on the stove, but then became distracted and fell asleep in another room, according to MFR Assistant Fire Marshal Jason Workman.
Unattended cooking fires are among the leading causes of accidental fires in Mooresville, MFR said.

“If it wasn’t for the smoke alarm sounding and quick reaction by the residents, this very
likely would have been a tragic fire with the loss of one or more lives,” Workman said. “This is an example of why we remind everyone to not only have smoke alarms in their homes, but to make sure they have batteries and are working by testing them each month.”
