Mooresville Graded Schools To Begin School Year Virtually

The school board voted to implement the Virtual Learning Plan Wednesday. Here's a run down of what that entails for each grade.

MOORESVILLE, NC — Students of Mooresville schools will begin the new academic year next month with online instruction, the school district announced Wednesday. The Mooresville Board of Education vote approving the plan comes one week after the Mooresville Graded School District surveyed parents for their preferred scenario: in-person instruction with safety protocols or full-remote learning.

"This morning our Board of Education voted to begin our school year under Plan C," Virtual Learning Plan, the school district said in a statement, via Facebook.

The school board outlines specifically what the "Plan C" Virtual Learning Plan would look like for each grade. The blueprint includes a hybrid of live instructional time Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and daily independent work time.

Kindergarten — Third Grade

  • 45 minutes of live instruction for Math, four days a week
  • 45 minutes of live instruction for integrated literacy, four days a week
  • 2 hours independent work time daily
  • 16 total hours of weekly blended instruction

Fourth Grade — Sixth Grade

  • 60 minutes of live instruction for Math, four days a week
  • 60 minutes of live instruction for integrated literacy, four days a week
  • 2 hours independent work time daily
  • 18 total hours of weekly blended instruction

Seventh Grade — Eighth Grade

  • 45 minutes per core class, four days a week
  • 30 minutes per elective class, four days a week
  • 45 minutes per class, weekly
  • 20-21 total hours of weekly blended instruction

Ninth Grade — Twelfth Grade

  • 60 minutes per class, four days a week
  • 90- 120 minutes per class, weekly
  • 21 - 24 total hours of weekly blended instruction

Under the plan, meals will be available for purchase under the existing School Nutrition Plan, and could be delivered throughout the community by school buses.

Last week, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced that schools throughout the state would reopen the week of Aug. 17 with in-person instruction with implemented safety protocols, such as mandate that all students, teachers and staff wear masks, while also offering families the option for full-remote learning. The options outlined by Cooper are meant to give school districts flexibility, he said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Board of Education, for example, voted in an emergency meeting last week to bring students back into their classrooms for a two-week in-person orientation implementing safety protocols, then transition to full online remote learning.

Iredell County's number of known coronavirus cases rose to 1,392 cases Tuesday afternoon, an increase of 50 newly confirmed cases in the county in the span of a day, according to Iredell County Health Department data. As of Tuesday afternoon, 25 people in Iredell County were listed as "currently hospitalized" with coronavirus-related illness and the death toll rose to 15, one more than reported Monday.

The percentage of positive COVID-19 tests in Iredell County is about 10 percent as of Tuesday, and higher than the 8 percent positive rate for the entire state, according to DHHS.
