IREDELL COUNTY, NC — Students from The Brawley School in Mooresville are helping provide Thanksgiving dinner for more than 100 Iredell County families this holiday, according to the school district.

"The baskets contain all the fixins for Thanksgiving along with a Food Lion gift card for the purchase of a turkey or ham," Iredell-Statesville Schools spokesperson Boen Nutting said.

This is the second year the middle school students created the baskets that will benefit families within Iredell-Statesville Schools, using items collected through a food drive, Nutting said.

"Our employees have a working knowledge of families that may be struggling this season," Nutting said. "When we know a family that might need a hand, we work to connect that family with community resources."

Earlier this week, students delivered baskets to NB Mills Elementary, and on Thursday, deliveries were made to Third Creek Elementary and Third Creek Middle Schools in Statesville.

"We have been working for a few weeks advertising the project and collecting donations (food items and cash donations) so that we can build baskets full of items that families can use to make a Thanksgiving meal," said Sally Webb, who is a teacher at The Brawley School. She and a team of volunteers worked with the students to complete the project. "In addition to food items, we include laundry detergent, paper plates/napkins, and a fun flyer with Thanksgiving facts and fun games for kids to play on Thanksgiving day."

The donations will have a positive impact on local families, one school administrator said.

"I cannot express enough how grateful we are for this project," said NB Mills Elementary principal Jonathan Nicastro. "Thanks to our neighbors in Mooresville, many students and families are going to have a feast this break!"

Patch has partnered with Feeding America to help raise awareness on behalf of the millions of Americans facing hunger. Feeding America, which supports 200 food banks across the country, estimates that in 2020, more than 54 million Americans will not have enough nutritious food to eat due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. This is a Patch social good project; Feeding America receives 100 percent of donations. Find out how you can donate in your community or find a food pantry near you.
