NASCAR’s Favorite Driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr Set To Retire

Dale Earnhardt Jr. returned to the driver's seat this year after a concussion. At the end of the 2017 season, he will retire.

MOORESVILLE, NC -- Dale Earnhardt, Jr., one of the most popular NASCAR drivers, announced Tuesday he will retire at the end of the 2017 season. The news comes early in the season that had marked a comeback for him after he sat out half of the 2016 season due to a major concussion.

Earnhardt, 42, has driven in 18 full-time Cup Series seasons, the last 10 seasons for Hendrick Motorsports. He has qualified for season playoffs eight times and has been voted NASCAR’s most popular driver 14 years in a row by fans.

It was his recent rehabilitation, however, that led him to his decision, Earnhardt said in a press conference April 25. “You’re wondering why I reached this decision, it’s really simple. I wanted the opportunity to go out on my own terms,” he said.

“I had a lot to think about over the last several months,” he added. “I wasn’t sure I would have the opportunity to compete. This season has a been a blessing for me.”

Earnhardt said while he’s leaving Cup series, he plans on staying involved in the sport.
