NC Schools Superintendent Announces Reopening Task Force

The state's schools superintendent announced Thursday a reopening task force that will help North Carolina public schools get back on track.

NORTH CAROLINA – The state's schools superintendent announced Thursday a reopening task force that will help North Carolina public schools address the challenges to education due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

In the announcement, Superintendent Mark Johnson said the task force will focus on several key goals to help public schools improve remote learning and prepare to reopen this fall. Those tasks include:

  • Improving remote learning opportunities so that they are more user-friendly and practical.
  • Meeting students at their ability level due to the learning gap when students return to school.
  • Developing social distancing guidelines in order to get as many teachers and students in schools as safely as possible.

"We have all been forced to react to the ongoing crisis and we know there are frustrations as we face these challenges forced upon us," Johnson said in a prepared statement. "We could not be more proud or appreciative of how educators and families have stepped up to these challenges, but we want parents, students and educators to know that we recognize the current situation is not sustainable."
