Property Taxes Rose In NC But Still Among Lowest In US: Report

North Carolina residents pay some of the lowest property taxes in the country, according to a new analysis from ATTOM Data. The 2017 property tax analysis found that North Carolina came in 33rd when it came to its average property tax rate — 0.80 percent — in the country.
Despite the low tax rates, the analysis found that the average tax amount in North Carolina actually increased 2 percent in 2017 when compared to 2016. The average annual property tax in North Carolina for 2017 was $1,742 in 2017 and in 2016 that figure was $1,706.
Eight North Carolina counties — Orange, Wake, Durham, Mecklenburg, Union, New Hanover, Dare and Buncombe — had an average property tax amount of $2,000 or higher.

The Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metropolitan area had an average property tax amount of $1,948 and an effective tax rate of 0.80 percent. The average property taxes in the metro area increased 6 percent when compared to 2016, which was double the increase in average property taxes nationwide.

- Average Catawba County taxes were $1,011, 1 percent higher than 2016
- Average Lincoln County taxes were $1,124, 2 percent higher than 2016
- Average Rowan County taxes were $1,225, 1 percent higher than 2016
- Average Iredell County taxes were $1,375, 5 percent higher than 2016
- Average Cabarrus County taxes were $1,665, 24 percent higher than 2016
- Average Gaston County taxes were $1,529, 6 percent higher than 2016
- Average Union County taxes were $2,173, which was 1 percent lower than 2016
- Average Mecklenburg County taxes were $2,684, 6 percent higher that 2016
Nationwide, ATTOM found that property taxes levied on single family homes went up 6 percent. Average property taxes for a single family home in 2017 went up 3 percent to $3,399 from the average property tax of $3,296 in 2016.
