'Significant Icing' Expected Tonight In Iredell County: Forecast
State emergency officials are urging residents to prepare for an ice storm as a winter storm warning goes into effect Wednesday evening.
MOORESVILLE, NC — Iredell County residents should expect severe weather conditions tonight including "significant icing" with up to half an inch of accumulation, forecasters said Wednesday morning.
A winter storm warning will go into effect for 24 hours in the county beginning Wednesday at 7 p.m., the National Weather Service said.
Areas of the state most likely to see significant ice accumulation include the mountains, foothills and northern piedmont of North Carolina, including northwest of the Interstate 85 corridor, say state emergency officials. "These areas could see 0.20-0.50 inches of ice accumulation (locally higher possible), which will likely lead to downed trees, power outages, and hazardous travel conditions," North Carolina Emergency Management said.

"If you must travel, keep a flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency," NWS said. "Ice accumulations and winds will likely lead to snapped power lines and falling tree branches that add to the danger."
NCEM also suggested these tips:
- Charge devices
- Locate extra batteries
- Restock emergency kit items
- Avoid unnecessary travel
- Don't park your car under trees
- Have a week's worth of food and prescriptions
- Don't leave vehicle wipers raised
- Trim weak or damaged branches around your home
