Traffic Stop Leads To Drug Arrest In Iredell County

After an Iredell County deputy pulled a vehicle for an equipment violation, he caught a distinctive smell. Here's what was found inside.

STATESVILLE, NC — A 37 year-old Iredell County man was arrested this week and now faces numerous drug charges after the vehicle he was in was pulled over in a routine traffic stop.

According to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy pulled over the white Chevrolet Trail Blazer driven on May 15 in the 3200 block of Taylorsville Highway in Statesville due to an equipment violation.

The deputy quickly realized through a data search that the vehicle’s driver, Calvin Eugene Daniels, as driving on a suspended license.

The deputy also smelled “a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle,” ICSO said.

Daniels and his passenger, James Dwight Hamilton Jr., 37 and of Statesville, were searched on the scene and Hamilton was found to be in possession of several packages of marijuana weighing 182 grams, ICSO said.

Daniels was issued a citation for driving on a suspended driver’s license. Hamilton was taken into custody and charged with felony possession of marijuana, felony possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana and misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Hamilton’s secured bond was set at $20,000.
