Volunteers Needed For Dog Park Opening: Today Last Day To Sign Up

MOORESVILLE, NC — Volunteers are needed for the upcoming opening of the Officer Jordan H. Sheldon Memorial Dog Park, which is set to open to the public on Saturday, June 5, Mooresville Police Department said. But hurry — today's the last day to sign up.

"We’re looking for volunteers, ages 16 and up, to help us with tasks such as set-up for the event, traffic management, and passing out water," MPD said. Volunteers will work in four shifts from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Anyone interested in volunteering at the event will be subject to a background screening and will need to fill out an application with the Town of Mooresville by Tuesday, June 1. That application may be found here.

The new dog park is located at 247 Cornelius Road in Mooresville, and honors the memory of Mooresville Police Department K-9 officer Jordan Sheldon, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in May 2019.

Sheldon, 32, was shot and killed with a semiautomatic handgun during what police described as a "routine traffic stop" along West Plaza Drive around 10 p.m. May 4, 2019. Police later identified the suspect behind the shooting as Michael Yovany Aldana, 28, of Mooresville. Aldana was later found dead from a self-inflected gunshot wound.

The Town of Mooresville and the Mooresville Youth Council are hosting the park's June 5 grand opening ceremonies. The event is set to run from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., and will feature food trucks on site and MPD K9 demonstrations, organizers said.

For those searching for a new pet, the Lake Norman Humane Society will also be at the park during the event offering pet adoptions.
