South End’s ‘Rail Trail Symphony’ To Open Tuesday

A patch of grass has been transformed into musical meet-up spot.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- A new musical meet-up spot along the rail corridor in South End launches Tuesday afternoon, encouraging city travelers to stop, linger and make sound.

The “Rail Trail Symphony” will kick off Tuesday, April 11 at 4:30 p.m. with a musical parade starting at the Fountains South End Apartments and a drum circle jam session.

The “Rail Trail Symphony” concept, located near the Blue Line’s New Bern Station, was one of 50 winners of the “Play Everywhere Challenge” by KaBoom, a national nonprofit organization that encourages active play.

The project also represents a collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Target, Playworld, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The interlude spot transformed a 7-foot by 29-foot patch of grass alongside the rail trail footpath into an installation of musical instruments and seating. The spot, marked by a colorful mural of sound waves on the path, is designed to encourage impromptu jam sessions.
