Police Charge 19-Year-Old Suspect In New Year’s Day Slaying
Carnis Ferdinand Poindexter, 53, was shot and killed outside his home. Tuesday, police said they arrested the suspect behind his murder.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte police have charged a suspect wanted for the murder of a 53-year-old Charlotte man shot in the street in front of his home in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day.
Carnis Ferdinand Poindexter, 53, ran to his front porch after he was shot shortly before 3 a.m. in front of his home in the 8300 block of Highlander Court on Jan. 1 according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the course of the investigation, CMPD identified Furquan Ali Thompson, 19, as the suspected gunman.

Tuesday morning, officers with CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team located Thompson and took him to police headquarters for questioning. At the conclusion, he was charged with first-degree murder, shooting into occupied dwelling, and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
