'Aggressive' Raleigh Cat With Rabies Bites Two Kids, Dog

The attack happened in Southeast Raleigh. The dog's rabies vaccination lapsed and under state law, it must be quarantined or euthanized.​

RALEIGH, NC — An "aggressive" cat with rabies bit two youths and a dog in Southeast Raleigh, police said Wednesday. A police animal control officer was called Tuesday to the 2300 block of Fox Ridge Manor Road. The animal was secured and later tested positive for rabies, police said.

The dog's rabies vaccination had lapsed and under state law, it must be quarantined or euthanized.

"Steps have been taken to advise the residents about treatment," police said.

The youths suffered minor injuries, a police spokeswoman told Patch in an email. The cat was euthanized.

  • Residents should not approach animals that they do not know.
  • Residents should ensure their pets have a current rabies vaccination. If a pet is allowed outside, a booster vaccine is recommended. Outdoor pets should be kept inside until they receive booster vaccines.
  • Do not feed stray or unknown animals, including cats and dogs.
  • Do not leave trash or food outside, unless it is in a trash can with a tight-fitting lid.
  • If a pet is fed outside, do not leave food out overnight.
  • If a pet comes in contact with an animal that might be rabid, contact a veterinarian immediately.
