Here are the top 5 stories in Raleigh today

  1. Raleigh NC has received more money from the federal government to help fund the New Bern Avenue's bus rapid transit line. There is still a lot to be done before the BRT system will be a reality, but construction is expected to take two years, with service starting summer of 2024. (Mass Transit)
  2. Part of I-440 was shut down in the early morning hours yesterday. A crash involving two sedans, one of which was driving the wrong way, left both drivers on route to the hospital with serious injuries. (WRAL, CBS17)
  3. NC lawmakers are looking at the possibility of more tax cuts thanks to the $6.5 billion in expected surplus. The surplus does not include funding from the American Rescue Plan. There is also the potential for raises for state employees, including teachers. (Fox8)
  4. Raleigh hosted a worldwide swim lesson last night. Many kids were able to be present, in person, for the free instructional session that taught the basics of swimming. (WRAL)
  5. A federal appeals court has ruled that a North Carolina ban on most abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy must remain unenforceable. Prior to this decision, abortions of an unviable fetus could be considered criminal. (NPR)
