I hope you all had a fun and safe fourth of July. It saddened me to not write a Patch daily for you all, but I have had friends staying with us to celebrate the holiday. Hopefully some of the fireworks articles I shared leading up to yesterday left you equipped to make some good plans. Today's news brings mostly follow up and fall out from stories we've been keeping up on.

Here are the top stories today in Raleigh:
- The good Samaritan who witnessed the car accident that left Antonio Luis Quinones dead, is lucky to be alive. More details about the crash and shooting have been released. The 911 caller witnessed Quinones' car hit the back of a dually truck, and when he went to check on the wreck, the passenger pulled a gun on him at close range, and miraculously missed. (CBS17)
- Restaurant and bar owners react to Governor Roy Cooper vetoing the bill that would eliminate additional unemployment benefits. Businesses are still struggling to get workers to fill their understaffed establishments, and blame the additional benefits. Gov. Cooper cited that unemployment is still declining after strengthening the work search requirements, and the benefits will be expiring shortly regardless. (CBS17)
- After the escaped zebra cobra incident last week, many Raleigh residents are still outraged at the situation. The whole debacle shed light on the fact that laws in North Carolina are stricter for dog ownership than for exotic pets. Neighbors have also reached out seeking answers regarding legal ramifications for the owner, but have received no clarity. (WNCT9)
- With the delta variant identified in Raleigh and spreading fast, doctors have cautioned people to prioritize safety. Vaccines have been proven effective in preventing the dangerous delta variant, and patients who have been vaccinated and catch it show less severe symptoms. (abc11)
- Just about anyone home buying in or around Raleigh knows, that the market is crazy right now. It's actually one of the most turbulent in the United States, with homes selling on average in 4 days. Raleigh is ranked second in the U.S. for fewest days a home is on market. (abc11)
