Raleigh Helicopter Crashes During Takeoff (Photos)

It was just 5 to 6 feet off the ground when the pilot lost control of the aircraft, officials told media outlets.

RALEIGH, NC — A helicopter pilot and passenger were hurt when the aircraft crashed at a state Highway Patrol training facility in Raleigh. It happened around 2 p.m. Tuesday near West Garner Road and East Tryon Road.

The helicopter had been trying to take off from a patrol hanger. The pilot was a member of the Highway Patrol's aviation unit.

"As the aircraft got approximately 5 to 6 feet above the ground, the pilot started experiencing difficulties controlling the aircraft," Sgt. Michael Baker of the Highway Patrol told media outlets.

At one point the helicopter tilted on its side and its rotor "struck the ground," he said, causing the craft to "fall on its side" and breaking off the tail.

The pilot was taken to a Highway Patrol medical facility. Emergency responders took the passenger to a Wake Medical Center with minor injuries.

"We're very fortunate that they were not further injured as a result of this crash," Baker said.

The Nationals Transportation Safety Board is investigating along with the Highway Patrol. The FAA has a representative headed to the scene.

It wasn't immediately known where the helicopter was headed. The names of the victims wasn't immediately released.

The helicopter is a 1970 model.

"It's a very sinking feeling when you see one of your helicopters laying on its side in the condition that it's currently in," Baker said.

It wasn't immediately known what caused the crash.
